When a hurricane threatens the Tampa Bay area, we see a huge spike in calls — before, during, and after. A lot of those calls are avoidable with some basic prep. If you live in Palm Harbor or anywhere in Pinellas County, here's the list I wish every driver ran through before June.
By June 1. Battery test, tire check, top-off routine, and emergency supplies should all be in place before the first named storm of the season.
Do not attempt to start it. Call a tow and have it transported to a mechanic who can properly drain the engine, transmission, and interior. Attempting to start a flooded car often causes catastrophic engine damage.
We operate until conditions make it unsafe for our drivers, then we shut down until the worst passes. We resume as soon as winds drop below operational limits. Post-storm, we run hard and long to catch up on calls.
