Flatbed towing is widely recognized as the safest method of vehicle transport available — and for good reason. When all four wheels are lifted completely off the road and secured on a flat deck, there is no drivetrain engagement, no risk of uneven tire wear, no road debris contacting the undercarriage, and no stress on the steering or suspension components during transport. For AWD vehicles, luxury cars, low-clearance sports cars, and any vehicle with existing damage, flatbed is not just a preference — it is a necessity.
Gulf Coast Towing & Recovery defaults to flatbed transport for AWD vehicles, 4WD vehicles, luxury and exotic cars, low-profile vehicles, modified vehicles with custom suspension, and vehicles with damage that makes standard wheel-lift risky. We maintain flatbed trucks in our Palm Harbor fleet specifically to serve these needs, and our drivers are trained in proper tie-down technique to prevent any contact between the vehicle and the deck surface during transport.
If you are calling because you want flatbed service for a standard vehicle — perhaps you have a nice car and simply want the extra care of flatbed transport — we are happy to accommodate that request. We would rather err on the side of caution with your vehicle than save five minutes with a wheel-lift on a car that deserves better. That is the family-owned approach to business.
All-wheel drive vehicles have a transfer case and differentials that are designed to spin at the same rate on all four wheels. When three wheels spin freely but one is stationary — as in wheel-lift towing — the system experiences stress it was not designed to handle. Even short wheel-lift tows on AWD vehicles can cause expensive drivetrain damage. Flatbed eliminates this risk entirely by keeping all four wheels off the ground.
Flatbed towing is slightly more expensive than wheel-lift due to the equipment involved, typically $15–$30 more for a standard local tow. For vehicles that require it — AWD, luxury, low-clearance — this cost is insignificant compared to potential drivetrain or cosmetic damage from an improper wheel-lift tow.
Our flatbed trucks have adjustable ramps that can be set to very low angles to accommodate vehicles with minimal clearance. For vehicles that truly cannot be driven up a ramp, we use our winch to pull the vehicle onto the deck. We assess your specific vehicle before attempting loading.
